Course Goals and Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  1. Have knowledge to describe the structure, process, and outcomes for conscious sedation

  2. Recognize anatomic and physiologic differences between the child and adult

  3. Know the classification and mechanism of action of commonly used sedation medications

  4. Understand the pharmacologic management of patient behavior with included oral, inhalation, intramuscular and IV sedation 

  5. Understand the importance of patient selection for sedation cases

  6. Know monitoring criteria and what to do in emergency situations 

  7. Understand the criteria for sedation patient selection

  8. Identify, reduce and eliminate emergency situations related to pharmacologic management

Dr. Lowe currently resides in Southern California. She has been a resident of California since receiving her Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in 1984 from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Prior to relocating to California she lived on the East Coast, where she completed a General Practice Residency from the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, University of Rochester, Rochester New York. Before moving to New York she was in Washington D.C. where she completed her DDS from Howard University and her Masters of Arts Degree in Higher Education from the George Washington University. Dr. Lowe has maintained a private practice for 30 years and is on faculty at the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, Department of Pediatric Dentistry. She also holds a part-time faculty position as a Visiting Lecturer at UCLA in Pediatric Dentistry. In 2016 she completed the Executive Program in Public Health at UCLA receiving her MPH degree. Dr. Lowe is a Board certified Diplomate of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Global health and the desire to help the underserved nationally and around the world has helped to support her interest in public health. Developing educational programs in health care for students overseas is another passion of hers.
