Olutayo Odusanwo, MS, DMD
Faculty, NYU Langone Dental-Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry
Dr. Olutayo "Tayo" Odusanwo hails from Lagos, Nigeria. Leaving home at 10 to attend an all-girls boarding school, very early, she learned the value of taking initiative and being self-motivated. Dr. Tayo also obtained her first dental degree in Nigeria during which time she helped cofound a mobile clinic start up - “Dentist on Wheels”. The mobile clinic helped educate, screen and refer indigent elementary school children for dental conditions. After dental school, Dr. Tayo moved to Glasgow, Scotland to study for a MS in Molecular Biology conducting research on the physiology of horse sweat glands. Living in Glasgow, she became acquainted with the rolling greens, kilt wearers, haggis and picked up a hint of a Scottish accent! The itinerant scholar subsequently relocated to Buffalo NY to continue her research, now focusing on the physiology of human and rodent salivary glands. Then, she longed to work with patients again. Dr. Tayo was accepted to Boston University (BU) where she earned her DMD. While at BU, she served as a Big Sister mentoring an 8-year-old at one of the local elementary schools. She spent another year at an NYU Langone Dental- Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program situated in a community health center (CHC) in Worcester, Massachusetts (MA) - further honing her clinical skills. This introduced her to community service; she subsequently spent 2 years practicing general dentistry at another CHC in Fitchburg MA- treating the underserved and uninsured, and conducting community dental outreach to the local public schools. In addition, she served as a faculty member to the NYU-Langone dental residents at her clinical training site.
